Participating in the 2024 LSU fashion show on April 28th was an exhilarating journey for me, especially with this year's avant-garde theme: District XI. This utopian, futuristic vision, inspired by cinematic and literary dystopias such as "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent," served as my muse, leading me down a path of imaginative exploration. My initial spark of inspiration came from the Capitol's children's uniforms depicted in "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." The elements of pleats, small black buttons, and a predominantly solid color aesthetic resonated with me, setting the foundation for my designs.I was particularly drawn to the color scheme and the atmospheric tension of the reaping scenes. The muted palette of grays and blacks I chose was not only a nod to the envisioned futurism but also an homage to the understated elegance of simplicity. Yet, I sought to juxtapose this simplicity with a touch of extravagance, integrating lace to invoke the Capitol's luxurious, over-the-top fashion sensibilities. This intricate detail added a layer of sophistication and complexity to my designs, challenging the notion of minimalism.
Venturing further from the established motifs of the movie, I aimed to infuse my collection with a contemporary edge, reimagining what school uniforms might look like for affluent private school students, half a century into the future. This vision was somewhat inspired by the stylish yet uniform aesthetic of "Gossip Girl," albeit with a darker, more edgy twist. My goal was to create a line that maintained a cohesive color palette while allowing for individual expression within the bounds of a uniform. To achieve this, I experimented with proportions, opting for higher hems and more tailored silhouettes in contrast to the traditional boxy shapes. This not only modernized the look but also injected a sense of youth and rebellion into the designs. Accessories played a pivotal role in bringing these futuristic school uniforms to life, with each model adorned in a manner that echoed the adolescent spirit of a schoolgirl yet exuded a distinct, personalized flair. High bobby socks, ribbons, and beret hats were carefully selected to complement the theme, alongside footwear choices like Mary Janes and flats that underscored the blend of innocence and sophistication.
In essence, my journey through the creation of this collection for the District XI-themed LSU fashion show was a voyage of creative discovery and innovation. By drawing on elements from iconic dystopian narratives and infusing them with a modern sensibility, I endeavored to craft a line that was both reflective of a utopian future and deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of contemporary youth culture.
For my debut look, I reimagined the quintessential jumper, infusing it with a blend of classic charm and contemporary elegance. This ensemble features a meticulously lace-up fitted bodice that sculpts the figure with precision, embracing every curve with grace. The skirt, a marvel of design, boasts precise pleats that lend it volume and movement, making it a study in the art of modern tailoring. Complementing this, a delicate lace long-sleeved shirt lies beneath, its intricate patterns whispering tales of timeless elegance. This look is a symphony of texture and form, designed to captivate and enchant.
My second creation ventures into the realm of bold sophistication with a shoulder-less, sleeveless cropped top that elegantly wraps around the torso. This piece, a testament to the allure of understatement, seamlessly connects to a lace-fitted bodice, showcasing the delicate balance between reveal and conceal. Paired with this is a mid-rise pleated skirt that adds a touch of youthful exuberance to the ensemble. Together, they create a silhouette that's both daring and demure, embodying the spirit of modern femininity.
The third ensemble in my collection is a harmonious blend of structure and playfulness. It features a button-down fitted vest that exemplifies tailored perfection, offering a sleek, streamlined look. This is paired with a low-rise mini skirt, which introduces an element of flirtatious charm. The combination of the vest's disciplined lines with the skirt's buoyant flair encapsulates a dual narrative of empowerment and freedom. This look is designed for the contemporary woman who navigates the world with confidence and style, making a statement that's both bold and unapologetically individual.
Acknowledgments
I extend my deepest gratitude to the LSU Fashion Association for creating an extraordinary platform that unites fashion enthusiasts and creative minds from diverse backgrounds, allowing us to showcase our passion and craftsmanship. This event stands as a testament to the spirit of collaboration and innovation that drives the fashion industry forward. A special acknowledgment must go to the executive board and the production team, whose unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and tireless work ethic have been the cornerstone of this event's success. Being a part of the production team, I had the privilege to work alongside these remarkable individuals, whose commitment to excellence is nothing short of inspiring.
I am also profoundly thankful to everyone who supported my fundraising efforts, particularly my incredibly supportive family. Your generosity has been instrumental in the realization of my fashion line. Fashion design is a complex endeavor that demands not only a wellspring of creativity but also substantial resources. Your contributions have been vital in procuring high-quality fabrics, sewing materials, embellishments, and accessories essential for bringing my creative vision to fruition.
A heartfelt shoutout goes to my Aunt Kerrie, whose assistance and invaluable connections opened doors for me that I could have only imagined. Her introduction to Mr. Tom Walko, who generously provided all the fabrics from his collection in New York, was a turning point in my design process. To my roommates, Veronica and Micaiah, thank you for your patience and understanding amidst the chaos of fabric swatches and sewing paraphernalia that transformed our living room into a makeshift studio. Your willingness to serve as impromptu models for pieces that were far from completion has been a source of encouragement and laughter along the way.
My heartfelt appreciation extends to my models—Abby, Keirce, and Ivy—for your availability and dedication. Your commitment to attending fittings, participating in lookbook shoots, and showcasing my designs on the runway has been invaluable. Your involvement has not only brought my creations to life but also enriched my experience in ways I cannot fully express.
Being a part of the LSU Fashion Association Show has been an incredibly rewarding journey. It has afforded me the opportunity to grow as a designer, to connect with like-minded individuals, and to contribute to the vibrant tapestry of the fashion community. For this, I am eternally grateful and feel privileged to have played a role in such a meaningful event. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for this unforgettable experience.
