Drag queens are well renowned for their glamour, fabulous outfits, and undeniable sass. While their fun and novelty are admired, the art of drag does not receive the credit it deserves for being one of the most creative and expressive forms of dress.

So, what does it really mean to be a Drag Queen?
A drag queen is an artist that uses the art form of clothes, wigs, and makeup to create a character that is often, but not always, of the opposite gender. This art form is not representative of one’s gender identity or sexual orientation, as a drag queen can be anybody!
History of Drag
Drag originated in the Shakespearean theater as a form of male-dominated entertainment. Because women were not allowed to partake in the theater, men painted their faces with rosy cheeks, wore bright lipstick, and sported long wigs on stage to play female roles. As time passed, these portrayals of female roles evolved into the more exaggerated forms of drag we see today. It wasn't until the 1920s that it blossomed into a well-renowned form of art associated with the LGBTQ+ community. ‘Drag balls,” or huge parties of men portraying women, became wildly popular in this era and furthered drag culture.

Drag Today
Over time, drag has developed into a powerful form of self-expression that celebrates individuality and personal liberation. Not only has the art form garnered awareness and acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community, but it also allows the world to see beyond the constraints of gender and obsolete societal constructs. Drag is a powerful means of shutting down oppressive gender roles and freeing the bold personality these queens have within!
Among many others, Raoul Paul has helped spread this art form around the world. This show is a competition between thirteen competitors who perform in drag to win the prize of drag queen superstar. Raoul Paul’s Drag Race emphasizes the importance of discussing topics long considered “taboo” as well as breaking down barriers that open the door for education. The LGBTQ+ community is an exceedingly unique and diverse group of people that remain proud of being exactly who they are. In the face of prejudice and discrimination, these artists have continued to proudly show their work to the world, and that should be celebrated.
Happy Pride to Everybody! Be unapologetic and proud of who you are!!!!!!
